              Exploring Sindhudurg Fort – The Sea                  Fortress of Shivaji Maharaj

Maharashtra is a land blessed with history, forts, and legends – and standing proudly among them is the mighty Sindhudurg Fort, a symbol of Maratha naval power and the strategic brilliance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Located in the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea, just off the Malvan coast, this fort is not just a monument – it's an experience.





                               A Glimpse into History

Built in 1664 CE by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sindhudurg Fort was designed to counter foreign naval powers and safeguard the Konkan coastline. "Sindhu" means sea, and "Durg" means fort – literally translating to "Sea Fort." Unlike most forts built on hills, this one is built on Kurte Island, surrounded by sea on all sides.

It took more than 500 architects and workers and over 3 years to complete this engineering marvel. Over 4000 mounds of iron were used to strengthen the foundations. Even today, the fort walls stand tall, fighting tides and time.

 How to Reach Sindhudurg Fort

  • 📍 Location: Malvan, Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra

  • 🚗 By Road: Easily accessible from Goa (approx. 2-3 hrs) and Pune (around 8-10 hrs).

  • 🚆 By Train: Nearest station is Kudal (around 30 km).

  • ⛵ By Boat: Boats ply regularly from Malvan Jetty to the fort (10-15 min ride).

 What to Explore Inside the Fort

Once you step foot inside the fort, it feels like stepping back in time. Here’s what you must explore:

 1. Massive Fort Walls

The walls stretch around 3 km, standing firm even after 350+ years. You get stunning views of the Arabian Sea crashing against the rocks.

 2. Shivaji Maharaj Temple

This is the only temple in India where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is worshipped as a deity. Built by his son Rajaram, the temple has a rare idol of Shivaji without a beard.

 3. Hidden Freshwater Wells

Despite being surrounded by salty seawater, the fort has natural freshwater wells, a mystery and miracle of Maratha engineering.

 4. Secret Passages and Tunnels

Some passages are now closed, but legends say there were escape routes and secret doors for emergencies.

 Best Time to Visit

  • October to March: Best for travel and sea conditions.

  • Avoid Monsoon (June to Sept): Boats don’t operate due to rough seas.

  • Carry water and snacks – there are limited vendors inside.

  • Wear good footwear – you’ll walk on rocky paths.

  • Hire a local guide to hear lesser-known stories and spot secret areas.

  • Combine the visit with Tarkarli Beach, Rock Garden, and Malvani cuisine for a full experience.
